Выражение встречается в британском сериале "Green Wing", сезон 1, серия 6.

Контекст такой:

Y - доктор Маккартни, мужчина, в ожидании собеседования
Х - Сью Уайт, специалист отдела кадров, влюблена в доктора Маккартни.

Х: Dr Macartney.
Y: Sue White, can I ask you a quick question?
Х: Yes, of course.
Y: Erm, my hair, does it look OK?
Х: Yeah. A lion's mane has never looked so free.
Y: Thank you.
Х: You're welcome.
Y: Could I borrow that hair thingy?
Х: My whaty?
Y: Clippy thing you put in your hair. It's an emergency.
Х: Well, OK then, but I want you to know, I don't let the squirrel out for just anybody. (снимает резинку для волос и отдаёт доктору)
Y: Thank you.
Х: Knock yourself out.
Y: What do you think? (собрал волосы в пучок внизу и закрепил резинкой)

В фильме перевели как "мёртвый ящик", но совершенно непонятно, что подразумевается.
Поиск в интернете ничего вразумительного не подсказал, кроме небольшой статьи из правил пейнтбола ("The dead box is where a player must go after he has been eliminated from the game. In the NPPL, there are two dead boxes next to the playing field that will be surrounded by safe netting. Before going to the dead box, a player must put their barrel plug over their marker, and go to the nearest dead box.")
Но и это не даёт понимания, о чём речь. Может, какой-то специфический британский фразеологизм?

Как тогда корректней перевести на русский?
Мёртвый ящик как-то совсем данный смысл не отражает.
Коробка мертвецов? (воспринимается скорее как коробка, которая принадлежала мертвецам, чем как коробка, в которой хранятся вещи покойных)

Если исходить из этого объяснения, то, похоже, герой благодарит небеса за то, что можно посидеть в приемной некоторое время перед тем, как зайти в кабинет на собеседование.

возможный вариант тогда получается, имхо,:

It's not a standard English term. You have to see this clip to understand it. It's a box into which the female (nurse?) regularly puts the clothes of patients who have died.

Here, she offers a shirt from the box to the male (doctor?). He begins to try it on, and she then says that it's been washed, because it's from "the dead box" -- i.e., she's taken it from her collection of clothes from dead patients. He says: "That's disgusting!" She then says that all of her own clothes are from dead patients.

Now I see that Denis888 posted this link earlier -- apologies. I didn't see it but I hope the explanation helps!

She then says that her top and trousers are both from a "fatal RTA" (=road traffic accident), and her shoes are from a "stroke victim".

"Покойники оставляют полезные вещи". "..."

Потому как длинное получается иначе название "хранилище покойницких вещей"

Да, согласна, без контекста неясно.
Я думаю, ещё возможны варианты "мертвецкий ящик/коробка/сундук" (по аналогии с мертвецкая = помещение для умерших при больнице, морге) или "покойницкий ящик"
