Subject: "форосского плена" "форосского плена"what is this in English? anyone know? context: |
alece if you know the english for it, please tell me. i have never seen this term in russian |
what do you think about "Foros siege"? I think it suits the situation. |
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foros http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gorbachev#The_August_1991_Coup During this time, Gorbachev spent three days (August 19 to 21) under house arrest at a dacha in the Crimea before being freed and restored to power. Foros Captivity? |
captivity or siege? captivity or siege? i just can't chose... |
I am going to say .... during his captivity at Foros |
Nina - напишите under house arrest in Foros |
We first learned of its existence following Gorbachev's Foros "captivity." : http://www.globalsecurity.org/wmd/library/news/russia/1996/960901_01.htm |
имхо, confinement? |
I might be wrong but to me captivity is an active process, when the victim is captured and moved to some place else. I offered siege, because it is more passive, i.e. the place where the victim is located is surrounded to prevent victim's movement out of the siege area, which is exactly what happened with Gorbachev. Siege also sometimes means resistance from the victim, but it is optional. I am against 'house arrest', beacause it is quite bland compared to the original 'плен', imho. |
confinement is good! |
no strict English definition there can be this only used to recall the reader that almost all state regime revolutions were made when the state sovereign left its metropolitan stronghold so "Foros confinement" may be the word |
The couple were detained for three days in their official holiday retreat in Foros, on the Crimean coast. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/412051.stm Foros is where Gorbachev was held for three days during the 1991 coup. Mr. Matlock wrongly claims that Archie Brown "thoroughly refutes" my arguments, which center around the suggestion that Gorbachev was not held captive at Foros, in his book The Gorbachev Factor... That phrase was applied only to her allegation that Gorbachev's forced isolation at his rest house at Foros in the Crimea from August 18 to August 21, 1991, was a myth. Collapse of the Soviet Union: Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev is put under house arrest while on holiday in the town of Foros, Crimea. |
My 2 kopeks: containment |
holding incommunicado :) |
