Пожалуйста, помогите перевести "strain".

Контекст (два разных отрывка):

One can see that the strain response is characterized with a close to elastic response at low stress levels, then the chalk yield and is going through a transition before the sample starts to deform plastically with some signs of hardening.

Спасибо. "Кривая зависимости деформаций от напряжений". Получается, что stress - напряжение, а strain - деформация. Но слово "strain" и в других случаях в этом тексте переводить как "деформация"? Например: The measured stiffness and deformations are strain rate dependent. Мне кажется, здесь перевод "деформация" не подходит.

Или уже приведенный пример:

почему не подходит?
deformation и strain - это синонимы, выбор в пользу одного или другого обычно обусловлен авторскими предпочтениями, ну и тем, как принято употреблять в определенных сочетаниях, как stress-and-strain, например.
Поэтому вполне может варьироваться в пределах одного предложения.
Так что словарные значения strain rate and strain response подходят, кмк.
(если нет возможности обсудить всё это с инженером)
