Subject: зритель картины arts. "На этом портрете женщина смотрит на зрителя немного отстраненно, возможно, этим художник хотел передать...."Подскажите, пож, какое слово использовать применительно к зрителю картины - viewer? observer? looker? что-то мне ничего не нравится :) заранее огромное спасибо! |

| Use 'viewer' or 'onlooker'. 'observer' isn't quite right but will be understood. 'looker' definitely isn't right and is also English slang for 'an attractive woman (or man)' -- as in "She's a bit of a looker". So avoid this. |

| from what i noticed, 'observer' is normally used when the object of observation has some sort of behavior (i.e. dynamics) - something a picture would not have, normally (except maybe for its natural degradation and decaying over time) |

| There's some truth in that: 'to observe' is usually used when looking at things happening/moving. The same applies to 'to spectate' which, in addition, is the standard term used when looking at sporting events -- as in 'football spectators'. When watching TV, it's 'viewers'. There isn't a single, standard term used with paintings, but 'viewer' and 'onlooker' are both commonly used. |

Local: Interesting. Shumov: 'to behold' is a bit of an archaic term nowadays, except in a few set expressions such as 'Lo and behold!' and '[It's] a sight to behold' . You knew that really though, didn't you...? :-) Рина Грант: 'audience' is usually used when there's either a) looking and listening involved, or b) just listening -- but not when you're just watching (unless the painting speaks....) |

| Надо же такому случиться, приехал командировочный из Лондона. Обсудили все типы зрителей, и он уверяет, что тот, кто смотрит на картину, скульптуру, монитор и проч неживые предметы - таки viewer. И международная мера количества просмотров - viewership - актуальна и в Британии. |

а вот еще можно просто [the lady] looks at one [in a somewhat withdrawn manner] viewer все-таки как-то не клеится в контексте "объект смотрит на зрителя", имхо |

Кстати, что-то другое искал, и viewer также попалось: Harwood has renewed the portrait. A thick chunk of hair nicked off of the head of his niece busts out of the top of the cracked image. Intimate, opaque eyes slide across at and away from the viewer and the painting is cut off abruptly. http://www2.tate.org.uk/intermediaart/entry15470.shtm Ну как говорится, есть варианты. |
