Спасибо огромное всем, I am very literal - that is my problem, if I see нештатный, I am absolutely sure there is a proper English word for it, forgetting that we have a great many words in Russian which do not necessarily have equivalents in English. I suppose 'нештатный" is one of such words where we simply have to explain the meaning, поэтому огромное спасибо за 'unplanned, unforseen' -

У меня в текстах по воздухоплаванию, как правило, special или abnormal situations. В документах FAA попадаются abnormal situations, а технических руководствах компаний - special.

Правильно. Might occur! Must be prepared for! Чувствуете! По русски, это называется, как я уже писал выше, непредвиденная ситуация. Есть и план реагирования на них и еще 3 процента в смете на них выделяют. Неужели вы не чувствуете разницу непредвиденной, нештатной и чрезвычайной ситуации? Нештатной называется ненормальная ситуация, ситуация, не прописанная в инструкциях, вознрикающая спонтанно и не обязательно чрезвычайная.

Тогда пожалуй, abnormal situation. Хотя я чаще встречал contingency. Просто у этого слова много трактований, и Вы напрасно от него отпираетесь.
