Welcome. I am not sure I've ever heard this phrase though. |
Never, ever heard it. I just Googled "try to prove that dogs don't climb trees" and only found links to this site... I also see that someone's asked this already: http://www.multitran.ru/c/m.exe?a=4&MessNum=271236&l1=1&l2=2 |
The burden of proof is not on the accused." |
Мне еще пришло в голову выражение "You can't prove a negative". Короче, я бы поискал что-нибудь (юмор, цитаты) в области presumption of innocence, burden of proof и проч. |

Not a direct equivalent but how about "tarred with the same brush"? You need a reference point to use it though, e.g. "Yes there are drug cheats out there but as a clean athlete, I don't wish to be tarred with the same brush", or, "The Fancy Bear leaks shouldn't tar all athletes with the same [doping] brush" https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2016/sep/21/fancy-bears-leaks-athletes-doping-russia-cyber-hackers |

or even, "whatcha gonna do when they come for you" again, not a direct equivalent but fairly widely used (usually sung) |
not even close. |

Thank you for your valuable contribution, Amor. It really depends whether you are speaking before or after the fact. If you're trying to deal with the consequences of your/someone else's past actions, you could use square the circle, e.g. so how do I square that circle? |
Thank you, lots of good ideas! Nephew's suggestion (nephew is a she? That's confusing) is indeed intriguing. "Have you stopped beating your wife?" somehow has the same flavor, even though it's not the same thing. If you like in 1984, I believe their example is something like "You can prove that 2 + 2 = 5." Which was the other one I was leaning towards... but it's not quite idiomatic. Of course, there isn't going to a completely equivalent one. |
