Easy mistake to make, Amor. Americans traditionally say 'billboard' (note eg 'Billboard' magazine), whereas we say 'advertising hoarding'. However, 'billboard' has become increasingly common in UK English over the past 30+ years. That presenter is Jonathon Porritt. He's a UK environmentalist and, strangely, used to live just round the corner from me here in Cheltenham. |
///Americans traditionally say 'billboard' (note eg 'Billboard' magazine), whereas we say 'advertising hoarding'./// Why he uses both words? (advertising hoardings, billboards...). Seems there should be a difference between them. |

I don't know. If you look in Wikipedia, it says: "A billboard (also called a hoarding in the UK and many other parts of the world) is a large outdoor advertising structure ...." So I suspect he's either just being tautological, or else he's aiming his report at both UK and US viewers. |
Probably. I should say I didn't know the word "hoarding". Not because it is not used here, but because my vocabulary is not so great. However, I read somewhere that "hoarding" simply means fencing around construction site, for example. And yes, I often see some sort of advertising on those plywood fences. |

Don't worry, your English is better than my Russian. Yes, 'hoarding' can mean a temporary fence around a building site as well. |
thanks |
2 ts вообще-то в этом ролике есть автоматические субтитры в которых: "advertising hoardings billboards newspapers magazines the TV Week of" кнопочка в правом нижнем углу плеера - если что :-) |
