"Aah, another day, another missed performance.", как вариант. |

If he's saying that he really wanted to go the concert, and is annoyed with himself because he missed it, an ironic/sarcastic way of saying this would be: 'I managed to miss the concert'. In other words, he's saying (sarcastically) that it was an 'achievement' but indicating very clearly that in fact it was a disaster. Similarly, 'I went to the horse races and managed to lose £10,000 in just ten minutes'. If he's blaming s.o./sth else for preventing him seeing the concert, you can say 'Thanks to x, I managed to miss the concert'. |

John, what'd you say to 'I was lucky enough to...' or 'I was so lucky to...'? Will this work in an ironic way? |
managed в значении "умудрился" 'I was so lucky to miss the concert' would simply mean that either the guy didn't want to go to the said concert in the first place or he feels that it was a good thing that he didn't go in retrospective. (For whatever reason - a bad weather, a lousy performance, a terrorist attack). There is no overt irony in this. |
yet again... |
yay, I managed to miss the concert!
succeeded in missing the concert. |
effectively managed to miss out on yet another concert |
На мой взгляд, "благополучно" здесь можно перевести как "predictably" There was a rock concert and (wouldn't you know it) I predictably missed it. |
*wouldn't you know без "it" |
Вот пример: "When Johnny enters the darkened room, it is obvious that he has succeeded in missing the party altogether". http://books.google.ru/books?isbn=1476607362 |

Shumov is right @ 3:54. 'I was lucky enough to..../so lucky to....' wouldn't normally be understood to be sarcastic/ironic, it would just be understood literally. So the irony/sarcasm would be lost. Note that 'managed to' is normally used with things which are an achievement/success, as in: 'Successfully (missed etc)' may be used occasionally to indicate irony/sarcasm. You can use it if you wish, but it isn't nearly as common as 'managed to (miss etc)', and the ironic/sarcastic element in it isn't nearly as obvious. |
I still think that "managed to miss" is close, but not close enough: ''Этот концерт я благополучно(!) VS ''I managed(!) to miss the concert'' They just don't produce the same effect, in my view. |
Incidentally, (while I am at it :-) What the *uck is wrong with the site?.. I've been trying (unsuccessfully, not благополучно! :-) to post my answer for the last half hour ) |

mikhailS: *** implies some sort of effort, as if this individual had intended to miss the event in the first place *** If, as you say, 'благополучно' here indicates that the person has a history of missing things and there's no sarcasm/irony implied, how about prefixing the phrase with one of the following'? These all indicate that (the thing) keeps happening, and so is (unfortunately) predictable: If you want to show that the action's predictable and you want to add an ironic/sarcastic element, you can combine any of the above three with 'managed to': |

Shumov, лучше сказать 'bad weather', не 'a bad weather'. Или тогда 'a bad weather day'. |

Irony/sarcasm are very subtle concepts in English as they are in Russian. A lot depends on the speaker's intonation and facial expressions. Context needed. |

this is not my show again, например |
"It's not my idea to..." Why not не предлагать ) И до кучи - "Thank you wery much", которому нас учили с дет.
"Why, I say..." |
1. laughable 2. Why don't we [do this and that]? 3.
Why, I say, - said Don Sera - the honorable dons can evidently play a game of dice wherever it pleases them." |
""Why, I say, - said Don Sera - the honorable dons can evidently play a game of dice wherever it pleases them."" может быть, can't, а не can? |
ну, тут же why не вопрос, а старорежимное восклицание, как "Why, old chap, it is rather splendid to see you!" |
One sees no reason whatever as to why..." |
"Why don't we do it in the road? Mm Why don't we do it in the road? Ah Why don't we do it in the road? Mm Why don't we do it in the road? Mm No one will be watching us Why don't we do it in the road?" ;-) |
Есть, кстати, такой перевод: “Well, why not?” asked Don Sera. “I see no reason three noble dons shouldn’t play a game of dice wherever they like!”
Третья попытка - very ) |
Here I go again, missing out on yet another concert http://idioms.thefreedictionary.com/there+I+go+again |
O2cat, Here you go: "... Sarcasm so saturates 21st-century America that according to one study of a database of telephone conversations, 23 percent of the time that the phrase “yeah, right” was used, it was uttered sarcastically. Entire phrases have almost lost their literal meanings because they are so frequently said with a sneer. “Big deal,” for example. When’s the last time someone said that to you and meant it sincerely? “My heart bleeds for you” almost always equals “Tell it to someone who cares,” and “Aren’t you special” means you aren’t. ..." |
Yeah, right. |
