An operation in which a force out of contact moves away from the enemy. Some residual elements of the force may however be left behind to participate in consolidating the new balance achieved. The retirement is most of the time accompanied by the retention of a rapid action capability or the presence of observers. The actions taken are the following among others: more or less unobtrusive, in-theater presence or in the vicinity, keeping in alert of specialized units, exercises, training, etc. (FRA)
