military operations

The confrontation of warring parties. The systematic employment of forces of the different services and of strategic and operational force groupings in the theatre of operations to achieve political and military objectives. Such military operations are carried out on land, in the air and at sea and take the form of operations and engagements at operational and tactical level, including battles and attacks. They may be either offensive or defensive in nature. See also combat operations.
