They are conducted with troops, headquarters and command and control bodies from all the armed forces and arms of the service and with specialized support troops, and are one of the main methods of increasing their combat readiness. They may be classified according to scale as strategic, operational/strategic, operational, operational/tactical or tactical exercises, according to purpose as routine, operational training, test, demonstration or experimental exercises, according to the personnel under training as field, command-post or staff exercises and according to format as two-sided or one-sided exercises.
