A formation, usually permanent in structure and uniform in strength, within a larger subunit or unit. Battalions, air-force squadrons, companies, batteries, flights, warfare departments in ships, platoons, sections or squads, tank crews, gun crews, ships' companies, etc. are all subunits. The organization, strength and equipment of subunits are determined by their tables of organization and equipment on the basis of their roles.
