The combination of factors and circumstances affecting the preparation and conduct of an operation or battle. The principal elements of the situation are the composition and grouping of enemy forces and how they operate, the position of friendly forces, their condition, their missions and the availability of logistic support, the position and actions of neighbouring forces, the terrain, the climate and the hydrometeorological conditions, the time of day and the season, and the time allotted to preparing combat operations and accomplishing the missions. The situation may be strategic, operational or tactical in scale.
