main attack

[mein ə 'tæk]
gen. attaque principale
 English thesaurus
main attack [mein ə 'tæk]
mil., logist. Offensive action by forces along a chosen axis or in an area critical to the defeat of the enemy and the completion of the operational or tactical missions assigned. The direction of the main attack is where a decisive superiority of forces must be created and maintained and where the greatest damage will be inflicted on the enemy's force groupings. It is important not only to choose the right direction for the main attack but also to ensure that the main attack force grouping is fully prepared and supported for the mission and that its deployment is concealed. When employing conventional weapons, it is of vital importance to concentrate forces, to organize reliable fire for effect and to maintain a steady buildup of effort in the direction of the main attack.
