digging in ['dɪgiŋ in]
mil., logist. Creation of buried positions and use of the natural or artificial subterranean sites in order to ensure a given degree of protection of personnel and equipment, against the effects of nuclear weapons, while providing a protection against the effects of conventional weapons. Burying works are executed, upon order: 1. either by the combatant using the assets fielded in his/her unit; 2. or by engineers implementing specialized assets in particular, high-output mechanical assets. Digging in must be distinguished from the preparation of the fighting position, a reflex of every halted combatant, using his/her individual tool. (FRA)
