battle outposts [bætl 'autpousts]
mil., logist. Forces designated to protect troops in combat by preventing enemy reconnaissance from penetrating the approach march formation or battle deployment or by warding off a surprise attack on the forces protected. Battle outposts are set up either when defense is being organized while not in contact with the enemy or when there are no forward positions. The forces designated for battle outposts normally include a reinforced motorized rifle or armored platoon detached from the first-echelon battalions. In an offensive, forward units in the first echelon provide battle outposts. The navy also provides combat security for its ships. See also combat security. (UKR/NATO)
