met. | mold flux function | 结晶器保护渣功能 【作用】 (The mold flux plays a very important part in the successful continuous casting of steel. The flux must provide the following primary functions: (i)It forms a liquid slag pool on the liquid steel meniscus in the mold to protect the surface of the steel in the mold from reoxidation; (ii) It makes a thermal insulation to prevent heat loss; (iii) The liquid slag should infiltrate the mold/strand gap to provide a lubrication between the solidifying shell and the mold wall; (iv)The liquid slag freezes closely against the water cooled copper mold wall and forms a solid slag layer (usually consisting of a glassy slag film and crystalline slag film), which can provide the right level of horizontal heat transfer for the liquid steel being cast; (v) The liquid slag pool absorbs non-metallic inclusions from liquid steel.
