Dear Sabine,

There is the only one general definition domik (домик) in Russian for this: to rent a holiday home ("snimat' domik")
it may be kind of a summer cottage ("datcha"), but generally called "domik na vremya otpuska" (домик на время отпуска) or letnij domik (летний домик)-means a summerhouse.

Perhaps someone from other native speakers have a bit different idea of the Russian equivalent but it the first thing what you think of.

To me "datcha" (дача) would be the first choice for your "second home primarily used for holidays".

"Domik" (домик) is also fine but a tad too generous (a {nice} little house) -- I would not readily associate it with holidays without specific context.

I agree with you, sascha, in the point that datscha is a good choice for a second home, but mainly like "weekend cottage", because holidays or vacancy sounds to me more general. "datcha" may also need a specific context to be used for holidays.

I think the best solution could be: "domik na vremya otpuska" (домик на время отпуска) - it is not said that the holiday home is a single house it could also be an apartment within a house where other families live. If you are talking about "Ferienhaus" then "datcha" would apply I believe - and thanks, as this discussion makes me understand that thingsa re not always like they could seem.

Btw. I am going to create the words on the Italian wiktionary in future since on the English one they have problems with using templates.

One thing I have in mind is create all Italian cities with their translations - so it might be that I come back to you also on that :-) maybe asking for confirmation on things I already have.

I don't insist on "domik" either, but "datcha" can be translated into English like a country house (out of the town), cottage, summer residence / cottage, villa. The German version would be then close to "Datsche, Wochenendhaus"

Of course the plural form for Russian is missing right now. I am also trying to involve people from the Russian and Ukrainian wikipedia - but there are not so many users there right now and those who are there are mostly editing new articles.
