В некоторых контекстах может и dude подойти, но это только если люди друг друга хорошо знают, да и коннотация немного не та.

выдержка была для информации. Я доверяю не этому источнику, а своему опыту и опыту людей с которыми общаюсь.

Pal еще лет 50 назад не несло отрицательной коннотации, но сейчас она ощутима и очень. Хотя опять же, зависит от ситуации. Если например кто-то Вам в поездке помогал с чемоданами, разрешать какие-то вопросы и т.п, Вы можете сказать "Jack, you're real pal". Это будет нормально.

В большинстве же случаев, это слово произносится с сарказмом. Помните сцену из Red Heat, где Белуши допрашивал Виктора Роста(вели) и хочет узнать, что за ключ у него. Его партнер говорит, указывая на преступника:

Why don't you ask you pal?
Вот здесь уже слово friend or buddy не подойдут, а Pal в самый раз.

Каких то научных ссылок привести не могу, все из личного опыта. Опрошен не один десяток бриттов и американцев :-)

спорить не буду, ибо у меня в жизни было мало возможности "обкатать" использование слова pal в общении с англосаксами, но вот что меня искренне поразило, когда я заглянула в Вебстер, так это то, что оно ведет свою родословную от brother.

to sum up: переводим pal как "брателло" :) и коннотация слегонца отрицательная, и корень - общий - индоевропейский, и окончание -елло удачно намекает на романское происхождение :-))

old cronies = old people (also means old friends)

this is a meaning of the word and it is the main context it is used in today. when people talk about old cronies they generally are referring to old people. you might say "there were a couple of old cronies hanging out on the corner" "what a bunch of cronies"

it's merely a quirky use of the word in its original meaning. and i said that IN GENERAL it refers to old people. and i said that it might be an American approach to the word. get over it. plus, we would all understand this as "friend" in this context becasue our understanding of the word is not limited to old. and i do not plan to recant here becasue you found a joke on the internet.
