ОФФ: relocation to Kiev

I have been proposed the possibility to relocate to Kiev. I am concerned about the cost of living being high and the quality of life being bad. I am a native English speaker currently living in a former Communist bloc country, but not part of the former USSR.

I would be grateful if anyone would be willing to answer (in English or Russian) a few questions regarding life in Kiev (for example, whether there is an active ex-patriate community, whether one can survive knowing Russian but not Ukrainian, and what is the amount of a minimum monthly salary that is necessary to live moderately well).
