Subject: прошу объяснить правило
Пожалуйста, объясните правило использования (или неиспользования) герундия.
Например, в выражении designed for use in cold climates очень хочется написать designed for using in cold climates.
Никаких учебников под рукой нет, не могли бы вы объяснить?

Заранее спасибо

The gerund phrase functions as the object of the preposition for.

You might get in trouble for faking an illness to avoid work.
faking (gerund)
an illness (direct object of action expressed in gerund)
to avoid work (infinitive phrase as adverb)

В данном случае лучше употребить существительное или инфинитив или же пассивный герундий:
designed for use/to be used/for being used in cold climates
Активный герундий, т.е. designed for using in cold climates, может требовать после себя дополнение, т.к. герундий это отглагольная форма.
Все имхо.

будет ли корректно выражение (с грамматической точки зрения): designed for using grease in cold climates?

Мне кажется не очень. Надо, наверное, переделать предложние.

Grammatically, it would be correct if you mean that some gadget was design to run on/use grease in cold climates, e.g. if you have an engine, which runs on grease in cold climates, then you could arguably say: The engine was designed for using grease in cold climates.

If you mean that something is to be used in cold climates, then you would say "it is designed for use in cold climates."

I guess what I am trying to say is that if the engine above is to be used for something, then you would say "for use". If the engine is to use something, then you would say "for using + subject. "Designed for using in cold climate" sounds like an incomplete sentence, I want to know what it will be using. Hope it makes sense.
