Dumbsizing (Organizational): The act of or attempt to "streamline" an organization, typically through the reduction or elimination of layers or levels of management, without regard for preservation of those layers or levels with distinct function and critical responsibilities. Dumbsizing is often intended to "reduce the fat" of an organization, but can be seen to in many cases result in a loss of organizational "muscle." Also known as "flattening" dumbsizing has in many organizations negative impacts upon organizational effectiveness and resulted in negligible cost savings over the long-run.
