They were probably launched in the heyday of pipe smoking for youngsters to emulate adults smoking a pipe. They were probably then more blown by little boys than little girls because girls thought they were too masculine. Some people believe that bubble pipes can encourage children, specifically boys, to smoke. Bubble pipes are usually made of plastic, and cannot be used for smoking tobacco. Some bubble pipes have multiple bowls. Bart Simpson of The Simpsons is often shown "smoking" a bubble pipe when he intends to seem intellectual.
