"Crazy paving," the English call it - garden walkway Sunset, March, 1986 In mixing paving and plants, the options are unlimited: the effects can range from tidy, formal surfaces, ready to withstand regular foot traffic, to casual bursts of foliage and flowers between stones, brick, and tiles. But the end result is the same: lively garden floors that invite people to stand or walk amid the plants. Called "crazy paving" in England, this approach likely evolved as cottage gardeners unified scavenged paving materials by adding to or replacing what nature had sown between the stones. The idea spread from cottage to grander gardens. "British gardeners treat stone walks or patios like horizontal rock gardens," says Portland garden designer Cynthia Woodyard. "Once the basic questions of light, soil, and drainage are answered, anything goes; the walk or terrace becomes a place to meander through plants." As the photographs on these pages show, the crazy paving idea has spread to the West; gardeners here use a larger palette of plants to add interest to patios and garden paths. The formal terrace of flagstone and dichondra pictured at lower left has a carefully designed look; the impresionistic combination shown in color at right has a more natural, rugged look.
