The thermal desorption of oil from cuttings is a function of time and temperature. The higher the moisture content, the longer the time required to raise the mass of liquids and solids to the appropriate temperature.
With very high moisture contents, the retention time is increased, thus lowering the unit capacity to obtain the time needed to desorb the oil. The temperature required for desorption is a function of the type of oil on the cuttings and the final total residual hydrocarbon concentration required. If only diesel is on the cuttings, near-complete desorption can be achieved at less than 600°F, but if crude or other types of oils are found in the cuttings, the temperature may have to be higher. Near-complete desorption can be achieved at 900°F. This temperature is used to desorb crude oils from soils in soil remediation units.
