A slang term for the division within a brokerage firm that prevents insider information from being handed out by corporate advisers to investment traders. Coined after the "Great Wall of China," following the crash of 1929 the U.S. Government sought to provide a separation (or a barrier) between investment bankers and brokerage firms. This was intended to limit the conflict of interest between objective analysis and the desire to have a successful stock offering (or IPO). The Chinese Wall helps to prevent illegal practices such as front running by traders. |
