'Pay award' doesn't have to relate to tribunals here, although it may do. Sometimes when workers ask for a pay rise, their employer will say, for example: "We'll give you a 5% pay rise [a pay award] but we need to restructure the company and cut our workforce by 3% -- so we'll agree to give you the 5% pay rise if you'll agree to a 3% cut in staff". This is also referred to as a 'pay award'.

Where this is agreed between an employer and a union(s) representing the employees, the discussions are referred to as 'collective bargaining'/'collective negotiations', leading to a 'collective agreement'.
