Robert Lieblich:

Hello, In the following business usage, which one is more appropriate and why? "Could you please provide a break up of this estimate?" or "Could you please provide a break down of this estimate?" Whats the difference between the two?

"Breakdown" (a noun, hence no space) is the correct answer. "Breakup" (again a noun, again no space) is wrong. This is a matter of vocabulary. A "breakdown" provides more detailed information. In the case of an estimate, to request a breakdown is to ask the individual elements of the estimate and the price of each. A "breakup" is something entirely different.

The corresponding verb is the phrase "break down." If I ask for a "breakdown" of something, I ask you to "break down" whatever that something is. Same for "break up" the verb and "breakup" the noun.

У этого Роберта Ляйблища очень не английский бэкграунд. Я ему не верю.
