In the production of pulp, knot separation is the first real screening stage. Its function is to separate oversized chips and small knots that have not been fiberized in the cook from the pulp suspension and to separate the fibers from the knot fraction and return the knot fraction to the cooking plant. To achieve the best possible screening result, knot separation must not increase the amount of shives in the feed flow of fine screening by breaking up uncooked chips.

The knots are separated either before washing or in between the washing stages. The coarse fraction obtained in knot separation can be removed from the system, returned to the cook or used in fiberized form as raw material for board. ***In sulphate mills, the recooking of knots seems to be the most advantageous alternative considering the present prices of energy, raw materials and chemicals.
