Привязка нумерации трубопровода

Хотелось бы узнать кто больше "общается" с картографией, геодезией, что означает chainage в приведенном отрывке. ДОкумент посвящен нумерации трубопровода и его привязке к местности. Толковый англ. словарь ничего мне - негеодезисту - не дает. Контекст прилагается:

The pipeline alignment drawings shall form the basis of the pipeline identification system.
Each AFC alignment drawing represents approximately 2 km, and is determined from individual sheet matchlines. For the purposes of this document 1 (one) kilometer shall represent 1 (one) section, thus section 85 commences at chainage KP 85+000.00 and progresses to chainage KP 85+999.00. Each section identification is numerically sequenced (from 0) with the relevant Kilometer chainage (from 0+000.00). All weld numbering containing the section prefix and weld number shall be unique and shall be determined from the location references and abbreviations as described herein.
The full weld identity, by use of lead alphanumeric, shall appear as an image on the weld
radiograph.
Chainage shall be referenced from the relevant boundary markers.
