That part wasn't a bother, but the entire piece I'm dealing with lacks detail, so I have no idea why this man was involved in the cinema in anyway, let alone in such a way as to be given such a pompous title.

I'll just keep in mind that my job is to translate and not to edit the original!

maybe he was not. maybe it was only his dream/aspirations (hence the "не смог пробиться")

If it's the case, perhaps you could use a generic-sounding expression,
like "the glittering world of (Hollywood, cinema, movies, movie industry) was everything to him. Or, ....."was his whole life", etc. Of course you, as a natine English speaker, have many such expressions at hand (definitely, more than me) to render this rather simple idea; however, to be on the safe side, you sometimes have to take a detour instead of a freeway, i.e., to use descriptive language to cover the meaning without having to bother about details.
In fact, the guy in question could be a gaffer, key grip, promoter, assistant, agent, even a movie star - anybody; there are a lot of people out there with a true passion of this kind.
