Subject: In point of fact
Господа ансеры подскажите, "In point of fact" как синоним к "As a matter of fact" устарел уже окончательно или еще используется?

Спасибо

also: in fact, in reality, actually

i think it's still used, although less frequently than the other ones

2kath: Just how frequently exactly? Would you use it in your common everyday speech?

I've looked up my resources - no indication of the phrase being in any way obsolete, out of use, or too sophisticated, or anything. But: just like dealing with any similar situation - phsychologically - why should one use 4 words instead of 1 or 2 in a context as simple as that? There must be a reason. Btw, in point of fact, why are you asking? :-)

I, personally, would say 'as a matter of fact' or 'in fact' before I would say 'in point of fact' only because it isn't part of my everyday speech. But it's a matter of personal choice and should not be used as a determinant.

Words are such a subjective thing - for instance, I hate the word "moist" and I know others who do as well, but I couldn't explain to you why that is.

Well, I've just finished rereading "The House on the Strand" by du Maurier (written in late 50s). One particular thing that I noticed is the abundant usage of the aforementioned phrase. Never met it in the contemporary English literature, hence my question.

And I think it's precisely for the reason majesta gives - why use 4 words when you can say it in 2?

2kath: D'accord. I too avoid to use certain words in my native language. However, the situation is different in Russian or English, probably cuz I don't know them just as well and lack therefore that special "understanding".

2Kath: may I suggest an idea why you have a feeling against 'moist'? Just look at the list of various associations it provides:

2majesta - lol!
2 Монги - i think you're referring to 'intuitive' knowledge. and yes, it is much harder to obtain it with a language that was learned, rather than acquired. i can empathize with that.
