When we explored central Armenia on Sunday, one thing which struck me was that, of the two monasteries that we visited, the first, whilst archaeologically magnificent, seemed to have been totally given over to the admiration of tourists, whereas the second, in contrast, having been brought back into use for worship, with a strong dimension of identity (an impression shared by the local population), gave us a very different feeling.

думаю, имеется ввиду, что весь вид этого сооружения говорил о том, что это действующий монастырь, а не просто достопримечательность.
То есть, монастырь сохранил свой оригинальный облик и атмосферу.
