I don't know the origin, but grassy knoll kid might mean an artsy-shmartsy "alternative" culture wierdo... Could be related to the grassy knoll of conspiracy theories - i.e. someone that goes for unconventional. Just a thought

The origin of alternative reference might come from a movie Clueless, where stoners hanged out at a grassy knoll... (my daughter's contribution to the discussion.) In any case, there is no established "grassy knoll" phrase outside of conspiracy theories.

Sounds like it is used here purely as an alternative to "nerds", without implying that those kids were into conspiracies and stuff..
