A Bragg stack is a stack of quarter wavelength thick layers of materials of alternating refractive indices. To deposit the Bragg stacks the ends of the fibre optic cable are first prepared by etching away the surface and then polishing the etched surface flat to within, for example, a tenth of a wavelength (this polishing criteria is a commonly adopted standard for high-precision optical surfaces).
