A mint stamp is as it was issued at the post office. A used stamp has been cancelled or otherwise altered from its mint state. A hinge is a small gummed piece of glassine material about ½” x ¾” used to mount stamps in an album. A hinged stamp is one showing evidence of having had a hinge applied.

Generally speaking, mint, never hinged stamps are worth more than the stamp in used condition.
