Помогите, please, точно перевести 2 выражения: to commit mind-suicide и mental habits (умственные наклонности?)

mental habits = привычки ума

to commit mind-suicide = забыть о (неприятном) прошлом

Пример употребления "mind-suicide":

Материал художественно-философского характера. Приводится пример состояния отчаявшегося героя, оказавшегося в безвыходной ситуации: "What must I do to be saved? Northing is worth doing"... There is no help.... He had better cut his throat or commit mind-suicide.

И ещё, не встречалось ли вам слово "vastations"? Вообще не могу найти в словарях....

Попробую перевести последнее предложение:
Перерезать себе горло или сойти с ума было бы для него лучшим выбором.

А слово "vastation" прекрасно гуглится:
