Sanctuary Policies

Sanctuary is a religious term that dates back to biblical times, when places of refuge were set up to protect people fearing retribution for civil and criminal offenses. Most recently, in the context of immigration matters, some American churches began granting what they called sanctuary in the 1980s to Central Americans who had entered the U.S. illegally during a period of civil unrest in their homelands.
