Subject: отнюдь
Afternoon folks!

I have a question about the usage of the word отнюдь.

Someone last night told me that it is like saying "то есть" but looking it up on MT gives me a rahter different take on the word.

Could someone maybe give me a few examples in Russian of its usage and the English equivalents of these examples.

I would really appreciate it! I would like to be able to use the word but first I need to be sure what it means.

Thanks a million!

It's a bit obsolete, out of use, literary, not used by young people or on a daily basis. Mostly by the press, poloticos for pomp effect.

Nina,
так там же в М-тране есть еще и фразы, и довольно много, посмотрите:
http://www.multitran.ru/c/m/a=phr&s=%EE%F2%ED%FE%E4%FC&sc=0&l1=2&l2=1

"Отнюдь" практически всегда с "не", за исключением, пожалуй, ответа на вопрос. "Значит, он такой наивный?" — "Отнюдь" (No, he is not/by no means)
It has nothing to do with "то есть", it's like saying "совсем не/вовсе не/нисколько"

Не могу предстaвить себе ситуацию, в которой отнюдь могло бы означать то есть. Приведенная выше ссылка не указывает на второе значение этого слова, когда оно выступает в роли частицы и имеет значение "нисколько", "(совсем) наоборот" и т.д. Примеры в MT http://multitran.ru/c/m/a=phr&s=%EE%F2%ED%FE%E4%FC&sc=0&l1=2&l2=1
на мой взгляд покрывают весь спектр оттенков, кроме этого.

Ср.

-- Он тебе нравится?
-- Отнюдь!

-- Do you like him?
-- Why, no!

Someone said if a person uses "отнюдь" he definitely belongs to the intelligentsia. :)))

And whoever said that (providing they were serious) certainly does not! :))

Russian "отнюдь" rather implicates negative argument for what was said above in a conversation or meant to be said

In no way i pretend arguing with what dictionaries provide for "отнюдь" (by no means, not at all) - this may as well be translated as your wish to anticipate negative attitude to the circumstances

отнюдь - not at all
