Subject: the noun itself in the noun phrase
Пожалуйста, помогите перевести.

Выражение встречается в следующем контексте:

The proximity of the adjective to the headword—the noun itself in the noun phrase—corresponds with the closeness of conceptual association, or degrees of classification: 'the old gothic church' is an instance of a class of churches, i.e. gothic ones, which happens, incidentally, to be old; 'the derelict old gothic church' is one of a class of old gothic churches which happens to be derelict.
