Это от арабского Eid ul-Fitr – окончание Рамадана и Eid ul-Adha – окончание паломничества/хаджа (Hadj/Haji) в Мекку и день жертвоприношений. У тюркских народов это Bayram – Greater and Lesser Bayram (aka Kurban (Qurban) Bayram)

Да-а, интересное дело... :-)
Еще интереснее только то – и это совершенно случайно пришло в голову в связи с постом Суслика, - что еврейский Н.Г. с их яблоками, получается, очень близко по времени совпадает с православным Яблочным Спасом (август – сентябрь).
Нет, есть все-таки что-то в этом... есть... :-)

Кто-то когда-то продвигал ведь идею, что «в прошлом воплощении» русские были евреями, или там наоборот, не помню.
Вот и расхлебываем друг за друга до сих пор.. этууу... ну как её.. карму...

Какое-то время назад завешивалось про погребальную иудейскую молитву Каддиш. Вот этот текст подтверждает сказанное: Kaddish is recited every year on the day of the Yahrtzeit (Hebrew anniversary of death). Kaddish does not mention the dead person, but is rather a praise of G-d. Однако похоже, что это не только погребальная служба, а также еще и, видимо, просто «служба», «молитва»: Kaddish comes from the Hebrew root Kadosh (holy). The word Kiddush – is the ceremony/prayer one says to sanctify the holiness of a festival and Shabbat. Поправьте, кто в этом разбирается.

Кстати, действительно правильно будет double entendre – двусмысленность, причем во всех смыслах, включая и самый безобидный. Не обязательно только лишь «рискЕ».

Спасибо. Практически все из того, что завесила коллега frownfoam, тут уже было – но повториться всегда полезно, каждый раз какой-то новый аспект подмечается.
Что касается постов коллеги mahavishnu, то оговорюсь, что от (правовой и прочей редкостной) латыни я на данной ветке сознательно и намеренно стараюсь держаться по возможности подальше по двум причинам: а) это все довольно редко встречается, причем в основном только в высокоспециализированных текстах, и б) всё это уже и так есть в специализированных (юридических, да и просто латинских) словарях.
Я же замутил эту ветку (конечно, сейчас это уже всё сильно разрослось и видоизменилось) изначально с очень простенькой и утилитарной целью - помочь коллегам разобраться в тех иностранных терминах и выражениях, которые а) сейчас пока еще сложно или даже невозможно найти в английских словарях (даже в Вебстере, Оксфордском, Рэндоме и т.п.) просто потому, что они ПОКА НЕ ПРОШЛИ РЕЦЕПЦИЮ В АНГЛИЙСКИЙ ЯЗЫК, но при этом б) употребляются тем не менее более или менее широко, однако НЕ в специализированной доктринальной (правовой и т.п.) литературе и прочих scholarly writings.
Таких терминов в английском всего, по моим прикидкам, вряд ли более 3000 – 4000. Если же начинать сюда включать вообще всё иностранное, что переводчику в работе теоретически может попасться (и в технической лит-ре, и в правовой, и в прочей), то эта ветка, которую я – еще раз, изначально, и это не скрываю, - замутил как веселую забаву, совершенно не серьезно, начнет превращаться в нечто сугубо научное и станет в итоге неподъёмной и неудобоваримой.

То есть произойдет ровно то, что с форумом делают оффы – поиск слов дико осложняется. Сервак слаб. «Слишкoм многo букф» © :-)

Или, как в “Амадеусе” говорил герцог, “Too many notes!” © :-)

Термины же elopement, emolument и т.п. – вообще уже давно вошли в английский и как иностранные не воспринимаются.

Теперь по сути вопроса.
Вот совсем недавно в связи с новыми мятежами в Париже – теперь уже среди студентов Сорбонны – многие заговорили о повторении событий «мая 1968 года».
Тут же, естественно, вспомнилось обсуждение на форуме где-то полгода назад терминов Left Bank, mai ‘68 и подобных им.
Вот очень типичное - из недавней статьи в FT (18-19 марта 2005):
There have been the familiar images of students barricading themselves into lecture rooms and being dragged out by the fearsome riot police, the CRS. Just as the so-called soixante-huitards (этот французский термин означает просто как бы «шестидесятивосмятники» :-), т.е. участники мятежей и вообще иконокластического движения среди французских студентов и интеллигенции 1968 года) tormented Charles de Gaulle and helped bring about his downfall, so their revolutionary descendants have been ridiculing de Villepin..
’68 entrenched an anti-capitalist mentality among the French elite, helping to turn the 30 years of heady post-war economic expansion, les trente glorieuses («славное тридцатилетие») into 30 years of economic underperformance, les trente piteuses ( «тридцатилетка позора»).

(Параллельно в Национальной Библоитеке в Париже, кстати, открылась замечательная выставка об Эпохе Просвещения – тоже есть пара полезных терминов (по-французски Le Siecle des Lumieres, the Age of Enlightenment). Выставка носит название Lumieres! Un heritage pour demain. - Просвещенные! Наследие для завтрашнего дня. (The Enlightened! A legacy for tomorrow) – речь о Руссо, Дидро, Монтескье, Ньютоне, Локке, Адаме Смите, Бенждамене Франклине и т.п.)

Из статьи про смерть Милошевича, историю его жизни и ту колоссальную (как всегда, естественно, и как бы наш брат ни ненавидел это признавать! :-) )роль единственной реально важной женщины в его жизни, которую сыграла Мира Маркович.
Тоже не обошлось без французского:
