True, these kind of things can stop you from giving blood. I am sorry that you are suffering. And I think the fact that you know what the pain is, gives another reason for you to help other people.
There are orphanages, and you may visit or take a child home for the weekend. It sounds strange but it works and these children really appriciate you doing this. I used to have a "weekend" kid a few years ago. He was adopted later, to US, he calls me sometime. Now for me it became more complicated as I have a child on my own and I don't know how I could have divided time and attention, etc. between mine and "visiting" children. :-(
Anyway, sorry for a long story. I am just very pleased that people think of charity and want to take steps in such direction.

to Nina79:

It was about 5 years ago, I don't know whether the regulations had been changed since then and whether they were the same in Russia as I live in Ukraine.
A person from Ukraine addressed me in Odigo (a messanger) and asked me to phone to an orphanage and inquire about a boy, you know, how thing were going for him, etc. That boy visited the family which addressed me every summer. I phoned and talked to the boy (Andrey his name is), and he said to me about these "weekend visits". So, I spoke to the headmaster of the orphanage over the phone first and then, in person. I described what i do for life, my family and relations, and she gave the green light.
That was all, basically. I hope it works for you, too.

a few years ago i tried volunteering (in the summer while i was studying) at this center for orphans who are already in their teens. it was a place they could go to learn "life skills". you know, how to do the laundry, how to cook a meal, what it means to be part of a family. also they could get additional education in various things - mathematics, languages, etc.
was a really neat place.
i lost the business card but i think the woman's last name was Engels.
anyone heard of this place?

you had to get off the metro at VDNH and then take a bus to the edge of the city and walk through some residential area.
I cant for the life of me remember the name of it and wish i could.
