"Too bad you don’t want to try your hand in moderating disputes" should read "Too bad you don’t want to try your hand AT moderating disputes." so, i guess u have gaping holes where ur knowledge of articles and prepositions should be. just don't despair, my friend, articles and prepositions r the trickiets parts of english, and a good grasp of them comes only with extensive exposure. so, hang in there, and u will eventually get them.

i would agree with u, we all make mistakes, and usually i m tolerant of other people's making them unless they take i'm holier than though, pontificating attitude toward posters i like, then it is a totally different ball game. and u know what, do take a red pen and lick my grammar, i would like to see u try. consider this a challenge. just a word of advice, though, fighting a grammar war with me has been a losing proposition for many on this board. u will be no different.

Восхищён, просто слов нет. Пока не помышляю об артиклях и предлогах, но верю Вашим словам:

Кстати, я обычно не люблю, когда используют u и r вместо you и are, но в данном случае это лишь оттеняет безупречность грамматики. Ещё очень понравилась конструкция про grammar war и losing proposition. С Вашего разрешения я использую ее на каком-нибудь другом форуме, заменив grammar на то, чем владею в совершенстве, ок?

Да.. В моих постах тоже иногда прослеживается pontificating attitude, но это лишь часть большой игры, как правило, народ всегда ощущает, что это только самоирония..

As for “try our hand in”, BOTH prepositions IN and AT are used.
Finally, “real issues vs THE real issues” – as I am sure you know, the usage of articles is determined by what the author wants to say, not by what the reader infers from it. I (the author) was writing about futility of correcting typos in GENERAL and did not have any particular “real issues” in mind; therefore, I did not use the definite article.

I am, as many of you here, “белый и пушистый” и кусаться не люблю (но могу). We all have to pick our battles in life; and this is not the battle I choose to fight, for the reasons outlined in my previous post. I have no quarrel with you.

А мое мнение о варианте Ильи... Да, действительно изящно. Но... (опять она чем-то не довольна :-). Ведь здесь не только все или ничего, вернее, "ничего" мне не нужно, потому что мне нужно все", но это одна сторона. Ведь тут как... Еще один пример: я тебе предан всей душой, и ты мне должен быть также предан; мой отец самый сильный, самый лучший, самый красивый, и я стану таким же когда вырасту (или мой муж должен быть таким же) (и проблема возникает тогда, когда подросток вдруг что-то узнает о своем отце нелицеприятное); я хочу похудеть и для этого я вообще ничего не буду есть, и никто меня не заставит проглотить ни крошки... Вот как все это объединить в одном емком понятии?

well, irisha and others, i guess we can all agree that детский максимализм cannot be translated in as many words, something a bit more creative is required here. the all-or-nothing, take-no-prisoner mentality characteristic of the early stages of personality development. i concede, it's a bit unwildy, but should do for the time being, as the french saying goes, in the kingdom of the blind, a one-eyed man is king.

Ириша, мне кажется, что из всех предложенных вариантов all-or-nothing thinking действительно лучше всего описывает проблему. Здесь и бескомпромиссность, и экстримизм. Я на досуге потратила некоторое время на изучение всяких сайтов про психологию подростков и поняла, что для них это не проблема. Они это просто называют teenage poor judgement - но с этим-то мы не согласны, правда?
