refinements

это слово встречается постоянно в целом абзаце...
Абзац называется Emerging Patterns и я решила перевести это как "тенденции развития", но с большими сомнениями...

в принципе сам абзац я почти перевела, не могу только определить значение в нем слова refinements, которое сильно повлияет на перевод.

Учитывая пожелания видеть в моих постах более полные контексты, напишу абзац целиком.

Emerging Patterns.
Three refinements to the models of environmental regulation mentioned above are emerging and becoming embedded into regulatory mix. The first is the integration refinement wich does not allow pollution prevention to be achieved in one area (for example, control of air emissions) by increasing pollution in another area (for example, by dumping waste that otherwise would have been burned into rivers, streams, or oceans). The second refinement is the use of economic intentives to achieve pollution control. These include discharge permit fees, taxes (like gasoline taxes or President Clinton's failed BTU tax bill), and the creation of pollution markets premised on a statutorily created right to pollute within a cap of allowable emissions (like the emission trading scheme of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990). The third refinement to existing domestic environmental regulation models is to take into account both international treaty obligations (like the environmental side agreement of NAFTA or the Climate Change Convention) and the international effects of domestic polluting activities (like CFC emissions, carbon dioxide emissions, and ocean dumping).

На мой взгляд, подзаголовок Emerging Patterns переводится как Развитие (улучшение, совершенствование) моделей (механизмов) (вероятно, регулирования охраны окружающей среды), а refinements - это те самые усовершенствования (уточнения, модификации), в результате которых оное развитие (улучшение, совершенствование) и имеет место быть.
