I would make the first prison sentence for anyone convicted of a minor offence one month in these spartan conditions. If someone then re-offended and merited a prison sentence, clearly the "taster" hadn't worked and the subsequent sentence should be a for a minimum of 12 months.

In fact if everybody was able to experience a taster prison sentence, I'm sure it would have the effect of making most thankful for what they have in their lives, however modest their circumstances. It would also have the added bonus of quelling the constant demands for more people to be sent to prison, since everybody would know that most of what goes on behind bars does little to benefit society.

taster jail is like boot camp for boys. young criminals get sent for short sentences to see what prison is like. it is supposed to deter them from further criminal actions.

does russia have any kind of equivalent?
