6. "The image as impression management".

This section is based on Erving Goffman's ”The Presentation of Self in Everyday Life” (1959). Goffman is often cited in studies on public image and his insights are developed in many books on ”impression management” (Tedeshi's 'Impression Management Theory and Social Psychological Research', 1981; Ciacalone & Rosenfeld (eds.),'Applied Impression Management. How Image-making Affects Managerial Decisions', 1991; Bromley's 'Reputation, Image and Impression Management', 1993). Goffman uses theatrical metaphors. He studies how people give positive impressions, raise certain definitions of the situations, demand respect for themselves etc. I review the topics of this thinking and offer criticism of the theatrical metaphor, too.
