The coming of plate tectonics, then, corresponded to a shift in emphasis of geologic thought from what has been termed the "fixist" school in which rocks are thought to remain throughout their existence near the place where they were formed, to the "mobilist" school in which rocks are thought to move laterally and geologically rapidly through significant fractions of earth's circumference.
