To Translucid Mushroom: It doens't matter how long I've been with Multitran and this phorum. I know what context is for... but you know there are things or words that have a common usage or meaning...And if there is no dictionary entry, I'm interested in ALL meanings. 2Chucha Вы с MT форумом (phorum - sic!) знакомы достаточно, для того, чтобы иметь представление о необходимости контекста. Если же Вас интересуют "просто словарные значения" - откройте словарь. To Alexis a.k.a. Althea: Thanks. It's not about combining words to get the true meaning...And you seem to have got me wrong in the first place. Following your advice, I should translate "rain cats and dogs" as to rain + cats and dogs, which is stupid. Pretty pedestrian makes ONE semantic unit. Please think twice before giving such advice. |

Chucha, вам просто нужно было сразу уточнить, что это цельное выражение. (Оно-то и так понятно, но хочется людям поболтать, пошутить, повредничать... а тут такой повод представился) по сабжу - pedestrian (noun) = "человек с улицы", "каждый-всякий", Вася Пупкин, отсюда и pedestrian (adj.) - обычный, заурядный, простой, дступный пониманию этого самого "человека с улицы". pretty - усилитель, "довольно, достаточно, в значительной степени" |

Althea: OK, tell me then what is the context, and is it varying for the aforesaid "to rain cats and dogs" or "to flip smth on its head" or "blow a fuse" any other set expression or idiom? Regarding contradictory definitions on UrbanDictionary, here they are - Common place, everyone doing it, conformity. Do you think these are similar? PS. forum, of course:) |

To nephew: This dictionary can be helpful in cases where no dictionary entry exists in other "recognized" dictionaries, and it did help me when i needed to know the meaning of many colloquial words. On the plus side of it, is the fact that it's being compiled by native speakers. On the down side is that i need to verify the definitins given there using Google search results.... Can you recommend a better resource where i can find words not yet entered into official wordstock? And personal thank-you to you for not nagging me just for the sake of fun/or manifesting your self-importance :) |

2 Chucha Urban dictionary напоминает мне старый анекдот по Вовочку, которому учитель физики был вынужден сказать "Молчи лучше, а то ты нам тут всю физику к х**м сведешь". Не знаю, как он может быть helpful, ну если только в о-о-очень специфических ситуациях. Я до сих пор от "rainbow kisses" в полном недоумении, хотя, казалось бы, совершенно простое сочетание. |

хочу заступиться за urbandictionary. пару раз долгие упорные поиски слова увенчивались успехом только в этом словаре. то, что с ним надо быть очень осторожным (как с любым ресурсом, контент которого модифицируется всеми-кто-захочет) - по-моему, само собой разумеется. тут преимущество ("живость") и недостаток ("замусоренность") - две стороны одной медали |
