Но когда дело касалось повседневных развлечений, французам всегда разрешалось брать от жизни всё ( наслаждаться прелестями) или же разрушить свою жизнь самозабвенно.

birthplace of liberty - я бы перевела "на родине гражданских свобод", "в колыбели гражданских свобод" :), тут, похоже, в этом смысле
life's pleasures - "радости жизни"

Да и в русском то же самое сейчас (да и давно так повелось, при соввласти, какой уж там радикализм!). Считаю, что термины соответствуют друг другу.

torq, я не путаю одно с другим, а обращаю ваше внимание на то, что интеллигенция и intelligentsia - не синонимы. и вы, пожалуйста, не путайте ЖП Сартра (образца 68-го) с Дмитрием Лихачевым :)), а Вики - с известнейшим лексикографом

Да и везде пишут - интеллигенция, чего тут спорить...
