Subject: challenging terrain
Как понимать “challenging terrain” в следующих контекстах:

1) As skiers gain confidence, they tackle steeper, longer and more uneven slopes at higher speeds. The easiest slopes are marked by green circles, and are typically fairly flat and known as bunny hills. The mid-level difficulty is that of a blue square, and are more challenging but not as much as a black diamond. A black diamond is steeper than a blue square and usually involves challenging terrain. A double black diamond is for experts only, and is very difficult to ski. However, there is no standard for these designations, it is up to each resort owner to determine. So, for instance, a blue-square (midlevel) trail at one ski mountain may be markedly more difficult than a black-diamond (expert) trail at another mountain.

2) This activity is about challenging terrain in the outdoors. Spontaneous competition often occurs between the riders as well, but speed is not the reason for trail riding. Just having fun and enjoying nature is the goal. Riders may stop at a challenging section and ride it over and over until new skills are learned.

3) Later, at her Swiss finishing school, she took to the art of extreme skiing and spent a holiday in the Himalayas searching for more challenging terrain. On her return trip however, the plane crashed deep within the mountains and Lara was the only survivor. Two weeks later, when she walked into a mountain village, her experiences had had a profound effect on her. Unable to stand the suffocating atmosphere of upper-class British society any longer, she realized she was only truly alive when she was travelling alone.

6) Though thousands came by sea, the following subject guide covers the overland experiencesalong a number of western trails: the Oregon, California, Mormon, Bozeman, Cherokee, Santa Fe, Fort Smith-Santa Fe, Gila, and Southern Trails. It would be the adventure (perhaps even misadventure) of a lifetime. The impact on the environment and wildlife cross country was enormous. The culture and lifestyle of Native peoples would be changed forever. Moreover, the men, women, and children who made the trip would discover hidden strengths as they walked and rode over challenging terrain for many thirsty miles; coped with dreary food or too little of it; buried comrades who suffered accidents or disease; discarded broken-down wagons and dealt with weakened animals. Wagon trains rarely stopped for long when a mother gave birth. They learned to hunt for their food, boil the creepy crawlies from their garments, and learned to cope with whatever weather came their way. And of course, they met and had dealings with American Indians along the way

7) Afton Alps Ski Area
Another ski area opens up to mountain biking, with good results. I wish I would have discovered this place earlier -- it has great views, all sorts of challenging terrain, and wildlife. (You should be able to see deer and maybe even a few wild turkeys on the trails.) A daily trail pass is $7.00.

Для военных людей, terrain - это местность, тем более, что речь идет
не об эстетике.

А для вполне цивильных: напр., применительно к современным городам-мегаполисам?
